Skills for eResearch

What skills do you need to support researchers doing eResearch? Computer-based technical skills? Certainly.

Terror of technology?

The UK's eUptake project examined why researchers do or do not use advanced ICT and has compiled recommendations to increase use. The report, e-Research Community Engagement Findings, lists some of the reasons researchers are timid about eResearch. The report begins:

Head in the cloud

Most people are probably wedded to their favourite browsers - whether IE, Firefox, Opera or Safari. As an incentive to switch to Google's Chrome browser, Google have launched CloudSave, which allows users to save files from Google Docs, Amazon Cloud Drive, Dropbox, Facebook, Picasa, and many other programs and applications. CloudSave doesn't work with many browsers, so anyone wanting to take advantage of the technology will have to install Chrome.

Brave new world of research

What will research will be like in the coming decades? The British Library has mounted an exhibition on this topic at Growing Knowledge: The Evolution of Research. Interviews with researchers from a range of disciplines explore how research has changed. In Projects, visitors can see examples of collaborative digital projects that push the boundaries of research. The Tools area brings together online tools for writing, collaborating, staying organised, that make the research process much easier.
