Managing data through the life cycle

Working papers from the 2011 Workshop on Research Data Lifecycle Management are now available. The workshop was held from July 18-20, 2011 at Princeton University, Princeton, NJ.

Papers include:

  • Management and Preservation of Research Data: Whose Responsibility is it Anyway?
  • Communicating Scientific Data from the Present to the Future.
  • An Excel Add-in to Make Scientific Data Publishable, Shareable and Archiveable.

Around the worm

The Worm Atlas is a database of the behavioural and structural anatomy of Caenorhabditis elegans, the transparent roundworm. The various types are covered and there are detailed images of the alimentary, excretory, and muscle systems. There is also information on specific sections of the roundworm.

Data management day

Papers from the Research Data Management Policy Summit, hosted by the University of Sydney, in June, are now available.

NewTube

The British Universities Film & Video Council host and curate nine online databases of film, television and radio content dating from 1896 onwards. The Council have now provided a federated search to the more than 13 million records in these databases. It is also possible to search within one collection rather than across them all. Not all collections make material openly available.

Open data to help combat deadly E. coli outbreak in Europe

Following the recent deadly E. coli outbreaks in Europe, researchers have released the first complete map of the genome and plasmids. The data set is being released under a public domain licence and has a DOI to make it easier to cite.

World Bank giveaways

The World Bank collects a lot of data and now they want to give it away. The Bank's Open Data initiative provides users with access to data, including more than 7,000 indicators from World Bank data sets. The Data Catalog lists available datasets, such as databases, pre-formatted tables and reports. Each listing includes a description of the data set and a direct link.

Supporting the research life cycle - what does it take?

What are the challenges in supporting the research life cycle today? Universities UK tried to answer this question with a one-day conference that examined the strategic role technologies can play in managing research and research data. The future of research?
