Dental oversupply not evident in rural Queensland

Two reports this week suggested that, while there may be a current (or looming) oversupply of dentists, no-one has told the population of Queensland. The Queensland government is examining ways to keep dentists in the public system, but the problem of doing so has been highlighted by two cases, one in Warwick in the state's south-east, and the other in the state's south west.

ADA condemns fluoride silence

Redfern All Blacks juniors benefit from mouth guards

Souths Juniors club, the Redfern All Blacks, this week had five grades, ranging from under 6's to under 14's, fitted out with individually moulded mouth guards in an attempt to raise awareness about the importance of oral care.

The initiative, supported by the University of Sydney's Poche Centre for Indigenous Health, Souths Cares, the Centre for Oral Health Strategy and Colgate, saw around 60 Redfern All Blacks players fitted with the mouth guards at Alexandria Park.

Tax deduction cap to hit post-grad numbers

Postgraduate full fee student numbers could drop by up to 30 per cent in just four years and Australia's national productivity could fall by at least $2.8 billion annually if the Government goes ahead with its proposal to tax education, modelling by Universities Australia has found.

New reports challenges six-month rule

A new review by the Deeble Institute has identified an absence of evidence supporting the widely-accepted recommendation that you visit the dentist every six months. The review found that "fixed recall intervals appear to be based on historical patterns of dental care, and there is little high-quality evidence evaluating how often people should have dental visits. These sources of evidence suggest that it might be better to move away from fixed-interval recalls to a risk-based approach.
