Library Trial of Thomson Reuters Data Citation Index

The Library currently has the Thomson Reuters Data Citation Index on trial, to provide access to research datasets for UQ staff and researchers. This new index connects researchers to quality data and data sets, across a range of disciplines, from around the world by providing links to data repositories. This makes data more discoverable and accessible by UQ researchers, and can potentially 'speed up the research process'.

Do You Know How To Cite Data?

Australian National Data Services (ANDS) states while data has often been shared in the past, it is rarely, if ever, cited in the same way as a journal article or other publications might be.

DataCite presents a strong case on how data citation can benefit the research and researcher:

Enable easy reuse and verification of data.
• The impact of the data can be tracked.
• Recognises and rewards data produces.

Highlight’s of Repository of the Week – Dryad

Dryad is an international data repository in the basic and applied biosciences. The goal of the repository is to preserve all the underlying data reported in a paper at the time of publications. Recognising the emerging trend of data citation, this is an excellent example of a repository supporting the management of data and sharing. See the November 2011 blog on Dryad for further information.

Open Exeter Data Asset Framework Survey

Open Exeter Data Asset Framework Survey, is a recently published study by The University of Exeter, on data management practice and attitudes to Open Access. The findings for the University has helped them to gain a better understanding of current research data management practices across different disciplines and with different levels of research experience.

Findings included:

Thomson Reuters - Data Citation Index

Thomson Reuters has announced the release of the Data Citation Index. The index will be hosted on the Web of Knowledge platform, and will become available in late 2012.

Article - Implementing DOIs for Research Data

In the most recent issue of D-Lib Magazine, Natasha Simons examines the growing culture of data citation around use of the Digital Object Identifier (DOI) System. In discussing the recent collaboration between ANDS and DataCite to produce the Cite My Data Service, and the implementation of DOIs at Griffith University, she reveals the complexities and benefits of adopting DOIs for research data collections i

Link your publications to your data

dcc.jpg The Digital Curation Centre has produced a guide to assist researchers to create links between their academic publications and the underlying datasets, so that anyone viewing the publication will be able to locate the data that underpins it.

Data sharing - is it worth it?

The 2007 paper by Heather Piwowar "Sharing Detailed Research Data Is Associated with Increased Citation Rate" posited that data sharing would help boost a researcher's profile.

Data management works !

JISClogo.jpg

UK higher education institutions have come under increasing pressure to manage the data generated by their researchers that cannot be curated by subject-based data centres and repositories ‒ and many were unsure how to do this, given the absence of advice, examples and good practice.
