Retraction Watch

Retraction Watch is a blog which seeks to highlight the latest scientific retractions. The blog started in August 2010 by Ivan Oransky (executive editor of Reuters Heath and teachers medical journalism a New York University) and Adam Marcus (managing editor of Anaesthesiology News).

So why a blog on retractions?

Half a billion well-spent?

The UK Guardian's data blog has set a benchmark for the use of data in reporting. It is pleasing to see the Canberra Times taking a leaf out of their book.

The Big Spend uses data to provide an interactive view of the more than half a billion dollars Australian government agencies spent on consultants between 2008 and 2011.

Proquest Historical Newspapers - ProQuest Historical Newspapers offers full-text and full-image articles for significant newspapers dating back to the 18th Century. This collection includes: The Guardian (1821-2003) and The Observer (1791-2003) -- The New York Times (1851-2007) -- The Times of India (1838-2002) -- The Washington Post (1877-1994).

Times Digital Archive - 1785-2007 - The major newspaper from the United Kingdom.

Trove digitised newspapers 1803 to 1954 - The National Library of Australia, in collaboration the Australian State and Territory Libraries, has commenced a program to digitise out of copyright newspapers. NLA is creating a free online service that will enable full-text searching of newspaper articles. This will include the first newspaper published in each state from the 1800s to the mid-1950s when copyright applies. The first Australian newspaper ever published in 1803 in Sydney is also included. Users may search by title, state or period.

The Pulitzer Prizes, for excellence in fiction, musical composition, and a wide range of journalistic categories, were first awarded in 1917. This website contains the complete list of prize winners from 1917 on, and provides the full text of winning entries in the Journalism categories from 1995 to date, along with brief biographies of winners.

State of the media

The Pew Research Center has just released its annual The State of the News Media report. The 2011 report shows that while American media revenue improved in 2010, and newsroom cutbacks eased, newspapers were still badly hit, with further job losses threatened.

Some experiments with new revenue models began to blossom. However, the report asks the question of whether, in the digital realm, the news industry is actually in control of its future.
