New report assesses open access in biomedical research across Europe

The European Science Foundation (ESF) released a report this week which aims to accelerate the adoption of open access to research articles in the biomedical sciences. The briefing emphasises the "moral imperative" (ESF 2012) of open access to maximise the value of biomedical research.

Genetics

Getting Started

If you are not sure what your topic is about, try one or more of the following:

Journals
Journals:

Nature genetics - a highly ranked genetics journal

Nature reviews. Genetics - a highly ranked genetics journal

UQ Medical Genetics journals - a list of medical genetics journals held by the UQ Library

Web Sites
Web Sites:

Australian Epigenetic Alliance - Australian site for epigenetic news, research and information

Cancer Genomic Atlas - information on the The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) program and how it advances personalized medicine

Genetics in Family Medicine - The Australian Handbook for General Practitioners

Genomics - The website of the U.S. National Office of Public Health Genomics

Human Genome Project Information - A website providing comprehensive information about the Human Genome Project and the implications of the development of the field of genomics

International Genome Consortium: An organisation to generate comprehensive catalogues of genomic abnormalities (somatic mutations, abnormal expression of genes, epigenetic modifications) in tumors from 50 different cancer types and/or subtypes which are of clinical and societal importance across the globe and make the data available globally

OMIM, Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man - A database of human genes and genetic disorders

Queensland Centre for Medical Genomics - An organisation which aims to deliver and enable personalized medicine for the state of Queensland and Australia

The race is on

NCBI: how to

The National Center for Biotechnology Information is now providing tutorials on topics such DNA manipulation and the identification of disease genes. There are also video guides on obtaining specific materials from the NCBI website and PubMed.

Bacteria: the good, the bad and the ugly

If you have ever had food poisoning or tooth ache, then it was probably some kind of pathogen that laid you low. Find out what that bad bacteria looks like at the Bacteria Museum, which provides photographs, consumer guides, fact sheets, and scientific links to further information. Food and water safety, the evolution of these microorganisms, the body's immune system, and how we fight bacteria are all covered as are bacteriophages, tiny viruses that live in bacteria.
