Friends of Fryer Event: Three crooked kings

On July 25, author and journalist Matthew Condon sat down in conversation with HPRC's Dr Geoff Ginn for a discussion about his latest book, Three crooked kings, which follows the career of former police commissioner Terry Lewis, exposing the story of how Queensland society was shaped by almost half a century of corruption.

The Hayes Collection of Ancient Coins

During September 1967, Archdeacon Edward Leo Hayes made the arrangements which saw his vast collection of books, manuscripts, documents, anthropological and geological specimens and assorted realia sent to the University of Queensland. The collection left an invaluable legacy to UQ's Fryer Library and anthropology museum.

Collection Spotlight for July: Six Alice things before breakfast

In which the Fryer library unearths five versions of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and transcribes a holograph of a note about a piano.

This weekend Oxford will transform into Wonderland, to commemorate the afternoon of July 4 in 1862, when Charles Lutwidge Dodgson first told a story of Alice's adventures under ground to the three Liddell sisters.

Fryer collections update

Until recently, all collections belonging to Fryer Library have been stored in the same building as the library. Increasing space problems mean that some items have been moved out of the building, and now need to be requested in advance of a visit to Fryer Library.

On the move

During the week beginning 3 June, Fryer Library will be working with a moving company to relocate over 1500 boxes of manuscript material to a new store, located at the Gatton campus. We have taken this step due to space constraints, especially as our collections continue to grow.

During the move, there will be some delays in accessing materials, while the movers are working.

Records of women's lives in the 19th century are very sparse in comparison with those of men or at least 'important' men. Women were usually invisible with few or no signs that they had lived and even wives of 'important' men were only recorded when they were attending social occasions or accompanying their husbands to events.
