Journal Articles

For recent information, journal articles are often the best sources. Looking through individual journals in the hope of finding relevant material is time-consuming. It is better to use the databases to find articles on your topic.

Journal Articles:

Summon (Library homepage) provides access to the UQ Library collection of print and online books, journals, theses, newspapers, conference proceedings and more.

Start with the following key databases for this subject area:

  • ASME Digital Library
Founded in 1880 the American Society of Mechanical Engineers produces the ASME Digital Library which is ASME's primary repository of current and archival literature
  • Compendex
Citations with abstracts to worldwide literature in engineering and technology.
  • IEEE Xplore digital library
Provides full-text access to IEEE and IEE transactions, journals, magazines and conference proceedings published since 1988 and current IEEE Standards.
  • ScienceDirect
Scientific, technological and medical full text and bibliographic information
  • Scopus
Abstract and citation database of research literature and quality web sources.
  • Web of Science
Access to current and retrospective multidisciplinary information from high impact research journals. Web of Science also provides a unique search method, cited reference searching.
  • Google Scholar

Specialised Resources

Specialised Resources:

Additional Resources

  • DieselNet - an internet information service on diesel engine emissions and related topics
  • NTIS - National Technical Information Service (NTIS) is a resource for accessing unclassified reports from U.S. and international government agencies including NASA, the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Department of Defense
  • Science.gov - searches over 55 databases and over 2100 selected websites from 13 US federal agencies; some full text available

Statistics and market reports

  • Australian Bureau of Statistics - The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) web site provides access to the full range of ABS statistical and reference information
  • IBISWorld - Detailed analyses of Australian industries, covering major players, industry performance and outlook, market characteristics, industry participants and recent news articles.

Standards

Standards:

Standards are official publications used in industry and trade to describe specifications and procedures. Standards provide rules and recommendations for: quality, safety, performance and construction, codes of practice, methods of testing, symbols and terminology. Use the following databases to locate standards:

  • SAI Global on-line premium
Full-text access to all current Australian standards; possibility to "unlock" international standards
  • IEEE xplore digital library
Full-text access to IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers) standards
  • Annual book of ASTM standards
Access standards in print from the American Society for Testing and Materials; use the ASTM International website (see below) as an index tool for the Annual book of standards
  • ASTM international standards worldwide
This site provides information about ASTM and its membership and projects as well as indexing ASTM and other standards online
