Getting Started

If you are not sure what your topic is about, try one or more of the following:

Handbooks: 

Books on European history will be found on the Library shelves at various call numbers, especially in the D area. For example:

DA United Kingdom and Ireland

DK Russia and the Soviet Union
DP Spain

Remember that two-thirds of new research in history is published in books. Use the Library Catalogue keyword search to find books on your topic. Some books are available online (e-books).

Journal Articles

For recent information, journal articles are often the best sources. Looking through individual journals in the hope of finding relevant material is time-consuming. It is better to use the databases to find articles on your topic.

Journal Articles: 

JSTOR
This database provides the full text of articles from many major journals. Use the Advanced Search and choose the Item Type article. Under narrow by discipline, choose History.

Historical Abstracts
Use this database for more advanced research. It lists journal articles and books on European history from 1450 to the present.

International Medieval Bibliography
This database lists journal articles on the European Middle Ages (c.450-1500).

Bibliography of British and Irish History
This database lists journal articles and books on all periods of British and Irish history.

Primary Materials

Primary Materials: 

Source books

Source books typically contain collections of facsimiles or transcriptions of original documents on specific topics. You can often find relevant source books by searching the Library catalogue by keyword. Use keywords such as England history source* or England politics source*. Change country name as appropriate.

Online Medieval Sources Bibliography
A bibliography of printed editions of medieval source materials. Some of the publications are available online.

EuroDocs: Online Sources for European History
Digitised versions of primary sources for European history, from antiquity to the modern era.

Connected Histories: British History Sources, 1500-1900
A federated search engine for a range of online sources for British history. Among the collections included are a number of subscription databases, and the UQ Library subscribes to some of these.

Documents on British Policy Overseas: Diplomacy in the Twentieth Century (online)

An increasing amount of archival material is becoming available online. The UQ Library has purchased some important digital archival collections from Adam Matthew Publications.

British Politics and Society
This is an online archive of source material, mostly from the 19th century.

Newspapers

The Times (London)
Available online from 1785 onwards.

The Guardian (Manchester, later London)
Available online from 1821 onwards.

Gale News Vault
A database of British newspapers from the 17th century onwards.

To find digitised historical newspapers from other countries, check the ICON website.

From the 1990s onward, newspapers from many countries are available on the Factiva database.

Translated newspaper articles and radio broadcasts from the period 1941 to 1996 are included in the Foreign Broadcast Information Service daily reports.

Government Publications

House of Commons Parliamentary Papers (United Kingdom) (online)
From 1688 onwards. Includes the papers presented to the UK parliament (including the Command Papers), and also the parliamentary debates (Hansard).

Books

Early English Books Online
Digitised versions of books published in English from 1473 to 1700.

Eighteenth Century Collections Online
Digitised versions of books published in English from 1701 to 1800.

Making of the Modern World
Digitised versions of books reflecting the economic development of Europe and the world from 1450 to 1914.
