Getting Started

If you are not sure what your topic is about, try one or more of the following:

Handbooks: 

Books on Asian history will be found on the Library shelves at various call numbers, but especially in the DS area. For example:

DS41-326 Middle East
DS376-495 South Asia (Indian subcontinent)
DS520-689 Southeast Asia
DS701-937 East Asia (China, Japan, Korea)

Remember that two-thirds of new research in history is published in books. Use the Library Catalogue keyword search to find books on your topic. Some books are available online (e-books).

Journal Articles

For recent information, journal articles are often the best sources. Looking through individual journals in the hope of finding relevant material is time-consuming. It is better to use the databases to find articles on your topic.

Journal Articles: 

JSTOR
This database provides the full text of articles from many major journals. Use the Advanced Search and choose the Item Type article. Under narrow by discipline, choose Asian Studies and History.

Historical Abstracts
Use this database for more advanced research. It lists journal articles and books on world history from 1450 to the present.

Bibliography of Asian Studies
This database lists books and journal articles in Western languages on all aspects of Asian studies.

Index Islamicus
This database lists journal articles and books on Islam, the Middle East and the Muslim world.


Primary Materials

Primary Materials: 

Source books

Source books typically contain collections of facsimiles or transcriptions of original documents on specific topics. You can often find relevant source books by searching the Library catalogue by keyword. Use keywords such as China history source* or China politics source*. Change country name as appropriate.

Newspapers

Times of India (1861-2003) (online)

Japan Times (1897 onwards) (microfilm and print)

Ren min ri bao = People's Daily (Beijing) (1950-1995) (microfilm)

From the 1990s, newspapers from many countries are available on the Factiva database.

Translated newspaper articles and radio broadcasts from the period 1941 to 1996 are included in the Foreign Broadcast Information Service daily reports.

Archival Resources

An increasing amount of archival material is becoming available online. The UQ Library has purchased some important digital archival collections from Adam Matthew Publications.

Vietnam War and American Foreign Policy, 1960-1975
A digitised collection of documents from various sources.

Intelligence Reports from the National Security Council's Vietnam Information Group, 1967-1975

Asia and the West: Diplomacy and Cultural Exchange
Digitised documents relating to relations between Asian countries and the West, mostly from the 19th century.

China: Trade, politics and culture online 1793-1980
Digitised documents relating to the development of modern China.

Books

The Making of the Modern World
Digitised versions of books published from about 1450 to the early twentieth century which illustrate the economic and commercial development of the modern world. Contains many works relating to European commercial activity in Asia.
