Getting Started

If you are not sure what your topic is about, try one or more of the following:

Journal Articles

For recent information, journal articles are often the best sources. Looking through individual journals in the hope of finding relevant material is time-consuming. It is better to use the databases to find articles on your topic.

Journal Articles:

Food Science and Technology Abstracts

FSTA, a food and beverage R&D database, is published by IFIS (International Food Information Service). It provides coverage of pure and applied research in food science, food technology, and food-related human nutrition. FSTA covers the complete food manufacturing cycle, from initial market research to final packaging.

CAB Abstracts

Bibliographic database covering international research and development literature in agriculture, animal health, forestry, human health and nutrition, and management and conservation of natural resources. As well as the journal literature, coverage includes selected conference proceedings, books and reports.

Agricola

Covers all aspects of agriculture and allied disciplines, including animal and veterinary sciences, entomology, plant sciences, forestry, aquaculture and fisheries, farming and farming systems, agricultural economics, extension and education, food and human nutrition, and earth and environmental sciences. Agricola is the US National Agricultural Library Catalog and Article Citation Database, indexing journal articles, book chapters, reports, audiovisual and other material. Since 2006 Agricola has reduced its journal coverage.

AGRIS

AGRIS is an FAO databases covering all aspects of agriculture, including forestry, animal husbandry, aquatic sciences and fisheries, human nutrition, and extension literature from over 100 participating countries. As well as the journal literature AGRIS covers unpublished scientific and technical reports, theses, conference papers, government publications.

Web of Science

Provides access to current and retrospective multidisciplinary information from high impact research journals. Web of Science also provides cited reference searching.

Scopus

Provides access to current and retrospective multidisciplinary information from high impact research journals. Scopus also provides cited reference searching via a View Citation Overview option.

SciFinder

SciFinder indexes the Chemical Abstracts Service databases that contain literature from many scientific disciplines including biomedical sciences, chemistry, engineering, materials science, agricultural science, and others. SciFinder enables structure and other chemical searches as well as topic and author searching.

CINAHL

Contains citations with abstracts to articles published in nursing and allied health journals. Covers nutrition and nutrition education. Also covers relevant materials from biomedicine, management, behavioural sciences, health sciences librarianship, education, and consumer health.

Biosis Previews

A comprehensive database for life science and biomedical research. It consists of Biological Abstracts, an index to the journal literature in experimental, pure and field life sciences and non-clinical literature in the biomedical sciences. BA is supplemented by BA-RRM which lists reports, reviews, meetings, and conference proceedings.

Medline

Indexes the medical and clinical biomedical journal literature including related topics such as nutrition and diet.

Pubmed

The US National Library of Medicine creates the specifically medical database Medline out of the wide-ranging Pubmed database. Citations in Pubmed chosen for Medline are fully indexed with medical subject headings (MESH).

Australian Public Affairs - Full Text (APA-FT)

Of the 403,000+ records indexed from 2,000+ journals in APAIS, approximately half are derived from 223+ comprehensively indexed journals. The scanned images of journal articles in Australian Public Affairs - Full Text are sourced mostly from these comprehensively indexed journals

FNIC and its special project Web sites, the SNAP-Ed Connection (formerly Food Stamp Nutrition Connection), the Healthy Meals Resource System (HMRS), and WIC Works Resource System (WWRS), maintain databases of nutrition education materials. There is also a small Native American Nutrition Education Database, as well a database available from the Food Safety Research Information Office (FSRIO).

GENESYS

A global portal to plant genetic resources for food and agriculture. Sourced from EURISCO, a European network of ex situ National Inventories of plant collections; SINGER, System-wide Information Network for Genetic Resources, the germplasm information exchange network of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR); the U.S. National Genetic Resources Program (NGRP); and other genebanks.

Biodiversity for Food and Nutrition

Led by Brazil, Kenya, Sri Lanka and Turkey, the Biodiversity for Food and Nutrition Project aims to improve the conservation and use of agricultural biodiversity for food and nutrition by providing evidence and raising awareness of the nutritional value of this diversity and its importance in food-based approaches to tackle malnutrition.
