Am I a Remote?
Remotes are eligible for a Mail Order Service. The service includes the mailing of books, journal articles (limits apply) and searches of journal databases. The Library will pay postage to your home address and you must pay the return mail costs.
Library patrons are classified as Remote by the Library if they are:
Undergraduate Students
- fully enrolled as external students; OR
- undertaking a placement of more than 2 weeks (NOTE: Students must apply for the service at their branch library before commencing the placement)
Postgraduate Students
- fully enrolled as external students; OR
- travel more than 50km from their home to a UQ campus, St Lucia, Ipswich, Gatton and Herston (NOTE: Students must apply for this service at their branch library)
Staff
- work at a location that does not have a UQ branch library on site (NOTE: Staff must apply for this service at their branch library)
Requesting items from the Remote Student Service
Request for Book Loans -
For details on requesting books, see Requesting Library items.
- Locate the book you require on the Library Catalogue.
- Click on the Request button.
- Complete details as requested.
- Select Pick up location Remote Service.
- Click on SUBMIT or X.
Request for Photocopied material - (when you know the details of a particular journal article, conference paper or similar or book chapter that you cannot access online)

- From the Library Home Page, select the Document Delivery page.
- Complete details as request and click on LOGIN.
- Select Journal Request for a journal article or select Chapter of a Book for a book chapter.
- Fill in the details required.
- Tab down to Special Instructions and type RMT. This identifies you as an remote student.
- Read the Copyright Declaration and click on CONTINUE.
- The page then splits horizontally into two sections, with a line separating each. The top half allows you to submit your request. The bottom half allows you to check the library catalogue to see whether your item is available in the UQ Library collection.
- In the top section, click on the button SUMBIT REQUEST - a message will appear in the top screen saying YOUR REQUEST HAS BEEN SENT TO THE LIBRARY.
- If you wish to place another request select ANOTHER REQUEST and continue.
Note
- Your request may be provided to you electronically.
- An email will be sent to your student email address advising you when it is available and how to access it.
Request for Information (when you are not sure what you want and would like the Library staff to find something for you)
IMPORTANT - As a result of a Request for Information, the Library may send you photocopied pages. Please sign the attached "Request for Photocopy" paperwork to satisfy the legal requirements of the Copyright Act and RETURN to the Library.

Undergraduates
- Loans
- As an undergraduate you may have 12 books on loan at any time from the University of Queensland Library collections. The Library will pay postage to your home address and you must pay the return mail costs. Overseas students must return items by airmail.
- The loan period is 28 days and standard renewal conditions and penalties apply. Other users may place a hold/request against items on loan to you. The Library will recall the item by sending an email notice to your Student email account requesting the item be returned. Please check your Student email regularly. Fines will be charged if you do not return items by the due date. (See Undergraduate borrowing)
- Photocopied articles
- Ten (10) journal articles from the Library's collection will be provided free of charge each semester. The articles will be photocopied and mailed to your home address. Usage above this limit will be monitored and charges may apply.
The library provides an online requesting and delivery service for journal articles held in its closed access collections (Warehouse).
- Searches
- If you do not have access to the Internet, or cannot visit the Library, your Contact Librarian will conduct a limited number of short searches (approximately five or ten minutes each) for you.

Postgraduates

- You may request 20 journal articles from your Home Campus collection each semester. The articles will be photocopied and mailed to your home address. Usage above this limit will be monitored.

- Searches
- Librarians will conduct a limited number of short searches (approximately five to 10 minutes each) for students who are unable to access the Library website or come to visit the Library. However we strongly encourage students to do their own searches whenever possible.

Databases
Some databases provide journal articles in full text. i.e. you can read or print the whole article directly from your computer screen. Remember to match your topic to the database. Some full text databases you might like to try:
Journals
Some journals are available electronically via the Library catalogue. Search for it by title and when you have located the correct journal, look for the heading "Online". Below this heading will be a link that provides access to the full-text, (eg via ScienceDirect).
For example: International Journal of Dairy Technology is available electronically. To access this journal, click on the via Blackwell Synergy link in the library catalogue.
