Types of Tours and Training

The UQL Cyberschool offers three types of tours for senior secondary school students:

1a. A guided tour of the library showing students where to locate the information needed for an assignment.

This tour will take 30 minutes (approx)

School students will then be free to use the library for the remainder of the day to pursue their research. This tour presupposes teacher-librarians and teachers having shown students at school, via the University Library website, how to use the university catalogue to produce a bibliography of resources pertaining to the topic being studied.

1b. An introduction to searching The University of Queensland Library catalogue with explanations of the Library of Congress cataloguing system and a guided tour of the library

This introduction will take 45 minutes
The tour will take 15 minutes (approx.)
School students will then be free to use the library for the remainder of the day to pursue their research.

2. A training session in searching for information from electronic databases using databases subscribed to by your school. The session will then explore more effective use of internet search engines such as Google. This session will be conducted at your school.

The training session will take approx 60 minutes
There is a charge of $7.70 per student for this service (GST inclusive)

UQL Cyberschool also offers training for teachers

Intensive training in Internet searching for teachers and teacher-librarians is offered through the UQL Cyberschool. UQL Cyberschool is able to tailor Internet training programs to your training needs. Courses and seminars are presented in a state-of-the-art training facility, with fast direct connections to the Internet. The training facility is located at the University of Queensland's St Lucia Campus in Brisbane. Each participant has access to a networked workstation for his or her sole use during the program. We are also available for on-site training, subject to the availability of computer software and facilities. Our training programs include:

1. Using the Net for Research

Duration: 3 hours

$470 (GST Inclusive)

This workshop is designed to extend traditional avenues of research by providing information on effectively using the Internet for locating teaching and. learning resources. Identification of and effective use of relevant subject gateways for locating specialist sites are introduced Through the use of hands-on and practical exercises, course participants will learn how to refine search strategies to maximise relevant results. Evaluating Net information for quality is also explored.

2. Database Searching

Duration: 1-2 hours

$270.00 (GST inclusive)

UQL Cyberschool staff can visit your school to conduct a session for staff on the use of the UQL Cyberschool website and the online database/s to which the school subscribes. This session is tailored to provide guidance on how to use these online materials in the curriculum.
