UQ's Student Support Services provide a useful introduction to getting published in a journal. Their advice includes sections on

  • why publish?
  • choosing a journal
  • preparing a manuscript
  • surviving the reviewing process

They also have writing tips, advice on literature reviews, and advice on writing your thesis.

Web sites to help with getting published

Publish, Not Perish: The Art & Craft of Publishing in Scholarly Journals comprises five modules that focus on publishing in scholarly journals. The modules cover: the role of scholarly publishing in an academic career; the essential steps of planning and writing a scholarly paper; developing a publication plan; information on publishing models; types of articles; collaborative authoring; and helpful resources to adopt. Writing Commons: The Home for Writers is a community site for writers and a creative learning space for students and teachers to share resources and pedagogy.

The Nature Publishing Group, one of the top journal publishers, also has advice on how to write an article for a Nature journal. It includes a section called How to write a scientific paper.

To find out more about getting published in scholarly journals the Emerald Group Publishing Limited has a helpful site that provides guides and answers to frequently asked questions.
