Research analysis and curation tools

The Web offers different tools to help you analyse, curate and visualise data.

The following is a selected list of tools. Please feel free to suggest new tools to include, or give feedback on the tools listed here. Tools are listed in categories. Need collaboration tools? Find them here.

Analysing and visualising

tap.jpg Tableau Public
A tool that can be used to convert spreadsheets into graphs, tables and maps which can be displayed on blogs or websites. Data is hosted on Tableau servers (which can cause problems with institutional firewalls). Data is live, and any updates will immediately feed through to wherever the data is displayed. The software shows to best advantage with numerical data. Requires download and installation.

Reasonably intuitive. The paid version might be too expensive for individuals. threestar.jpg

goochart.jpg Google Charts
Free interactive charts and data tools.

No plug-in needed, cross-browser compatibility and cross-platform portability to iPhones, iPads and Android. Users would need good understanding of JavaScript DataTable class and the Chart Tools Datasource protocol. twostar.jpg
gooref.jpg Google Refine
A tool for working with messy data, cleaning it up, transforming it from one format into another, extending it with web services, and linking it to databases. The software must be downloaded and installed. Need to learn the codes to use it effectively.

Potentially useful especially if you want to transform data from one format to another, e.g. from a Web source to .csv or Excel. Will take time to learn to use it effectively. threestar.jpg
