Managing references

How to manage references

Managing your references using software will ensure you stay efficient and help you progress throughout your academic career.

The University of Queensland Library provides three reference software packages at no cost to students. The options

  1. EndNote.gif
  2. EndNoteWeb-nogrey-resize.png
  3. refworks_logo.jpg

Use these packages to manage references and generate bibliographies when writing your articles. You can also store results from your current awareness services in databases in these systems. This way you'll keep up to date with developments in your field.

See the UQ Library's web site for extensive help with these systems.

Mendeley logo-mendeley.png is a free reference manager and an academic social network to manage research, collaborate with others online, and discover the latest research.

UQ does not have a standard referencing style. Often there is a standard style used by a particular school or discipline. Check your course profile or ask your supervisor for details on their preferred style.

Guides to Referencing Styles are listed on the UQ Library's web site.

Formatting citations correctly for a range of different styles can be challenging. CrossRef Labs has now set up an online service that can take a DOI and present you with a formatted citation in the style of your choice. An example of a DOI for the following reference is 10.1108/10309611111186984
Kevin Clarke, Jack Flanagan, Sharron O'Neill, (2011),'Winning ARC grants: comparing accounting with other commerce-related disciplines', Accounting Research Journal, Vol. 24 Iss: 3 pp. 213 - 244
