Finding full text

This was introduced in version X2. You can use the Find Full Text command to locate the full articles of your references. You can search for up to 250 references at one time.

Find Full Text cannot be used in the Online Mode.

Configuring your EndNote Installation:

If you are using version X3 or later, you first need to amend your EndNote Preferences.

1. In EndNote, click on Edit > Preferences, and select Find Full Text. Check all the check-boxes.

Tip: If you are not working in the biomedical area, you can leave the PubMed LinkOut option unchecked to speed up the search process.

2. In the OpenURL Path box, type:

http://library.uq.edu.au:4550/resserv

The Authenticate with URL box can be left empty if you are working on campus. If you are working off campus, insert this text:

https://www.library.uq.edu.au/ezp.php?url=

Note: The success rate is much lower off campus than on campus.

3. Click the OK button to save these changes.

Using The Find Full Text Command:

1. Click on the references you wish to find the full text article.

Tip: To select multiple references, click on the first one then, holding down the Control key, select your other references.

2. Click on References > Find Full Text > Find Full Text or click on the Find Full Text icon in the toolbar. References appear in groups under a Find Full Text group set. Endnote will now attempt to find the full text of your selected references.

3. You will be asked to authenticate with your normal UQ username and password. You will see a message telling you that no menu access is available. Click on Continue to begin the search. A copyright notice will appear. Click on OK.

4. Once Endnote has finished searching, the results will be displayed in the Find Full Text group that appears on the left of the screen. It will display how many were successful and how many weren't located. You can then view the references in each of these groups.

5. For those that were successful, a paper clip icon will appear in the File Attachments column in the Library window. When you go into the reference, a file attachment icon will be displayed in the File Attachment field.

Troubleshooting:

The Find Full Text function will only work with articles available from certain large online electronic journal collections. The EndNote software has to be individually coded for each of these databases, so not all articles that are available online will be retrieved by the Find Full Text function. If the database changes its interface, EndNote will no longer be able to retrieve articles from it until a new EndNote version or patch is released. Make sure that you have the latest version of EndNote and check for any software updates by clicking on Help > EndNote Program Updates.

If you have an EndNote Web account, enter the details by clicking on Edit > Preferences > EndNote Web. This can improve the success rate.

EndNote apparently detects the Windows proxy settings on your computer. If you are using a proxy server that requires authentication to access external websites, the Find Full Text function will not work, because it has no means of authentication.
