To access RefWorks, you have to be authenticated as a UQ user. To do this, you must always access RefWorks via the UQ Library proxy server at the following address: http://ezproxy.library.uq.edu.au/login?url=http://www.refworks.com/refworks You will be asked to enter your UQ username and password. Enter this information, and you will then see the RefWorks login screen. (Graduate and Alumni members of the UQ Library should enter their Library number and password.) The first time that you use RefWorks you must set up an individual account. Click on the link Sign up for an Individual Account. Complete the online form, and choose a Login Name and Password. Make sure that you remember your login name and password! Click on the Register button to set up your account. You will have immediate access to RefWorks, and you will receive an email confirming your login name and password. In future, you will login with this login name and password whenever you access RefWorks. Remember: USING REFWORKS WITH MICROSOFT WORD There are three ways of using RefWorks to insert references into your Word document: If you want to use the Write-N-Cite tool to insert references, you will need a plugin. You will also have to use Internet Explorer as your web browser. The Write-N-Cite plugin is available on computers in the UQ Library. You access it by opening Word 2007 and clicking on the Add-Ins tab on the ribbon at the top of the screen. If you are using your own computer, you can download the Write-N-Cite plugin: see below. You will also have to load the Write-N-Cite Proxy Configuration Utility: see below. If the following procedures look too complicated, remember that you don't have to use Write-N-Cite. Use the One Line/Cite View instead: see the help screen on One Line/Cite View. DOWNLOADING THE Write-N-Cite PLUGIN If you want to download the Write-N-Cite plugin to your computer, go to http://www.refworks.com/Refworks/WNCDownload.asp and follow the instructions there. Once you have downloaded the plugin, you will see a Write-N-Cite icon on the Add-Ins tab in Word 2007 or on the toolbar in earlier versions of Word. The online tutorials and help screens will explain how to use Write-N-Cite. USING Write-N-Cite OFF-CAMPUS (PROXY CONFIGURATION UTILITY) If you are on a computer at home, you will have to access RefWorks via the UQ Library proxy server. To use the Write-N-Cite plugin via the proxy server, you first need to load the WNC Proxy Configuration Utility. For details of how to do this, see the RefWorks Help screen on Using Write-N-Cite. Go to the section on Using Write-N-Cite from Off-site. Follow the instructions given on the help screen. You will need to insert the Proxy Server URL, followed by the URL for the RefWorks secure server. The complete string which you need to insert is as follows: View a demonstration of this procedure (Will open in a new window) Once you have loaded this utility, you will be able to use Write-N-Cite via the Library proxy server. When you click on the Write-N-Cite tool in Word, you will be asked for your UQ username and password, and then taken to the RefWorks login screen, where you must enter your RefWorks login name and password to login to Write-N-Cite (even if you are already logged in to RefWorks.) You are now ready to start using RefWorks. Click on the Help tab at the top of the RefWorks screen to access the Quick Start Guide or the video Tutorials. See our RefWorks Support and Help page if you need further assistance. Training courses in RefWorks are conducted by the UQ Library. You can edit the output styles if they do not meet your requirements, and you can even create new output styles, but you cannot edit the import filters which import references downloaded from other databases. You cannot create your own reference types. For example, if you wanted to create a new reference type such as Press Release, that would not be possible. You must use one of the reference types supplied with the software, or else use the Generic reference type. If you really need to create your own reference types, you should use the EndNote software. RefWorks does not have any mechanism for automatically converting journal titles to an abbreviated form, or automatically converting a journal abbreviation to the full journal title. If you need to work with abbreviated journal titles, you should use the EndNote software. If you have been inserting references into a document using RefWorks, and you decide that you need the more sophisticated features available in EndNote, this will require a considerable amount of work. See our guide on upgrading from RefWorks to EndNote. Your references will be stored on a server in the United States. United States government agencies are able to access your data at any time, without notice. You should consider the privacy implications of this. | |||||
