The Import function in RefWorks allows you to import references which you have downloaded from a database. You use one of the RefWorks filters to transfer the downloaded references into your RefWorks account.

However the references must be downloaded from the database in the correct format. If they are not downloaded correctly, the filter will not be able to import them into RefWorks.

The instructions on how to download from specific databases are given on the RefWorks helpscreens.

Browse down the list to find the company who produce the database that you are using. For example, if you are downloading references from the MLA International Bibliography, you should click on CSA (Cambridge Scientific Abstracts), because that is the company which produces that database. If you are downloading references from Biosis Previews, you should click on Web of Science (ISI).

The instructions will tell you if the database supports direct export. With direct export, you do not have to use a filter: the database will send the references directly to RefWorks.

There are some databases where direct export does not work from a home computer. This is the case with the CSA and Proquest databases. This is because you are accessing the database via a proxy server, which interferes with the direct export process. When this happens, you will have to download the references and then import them to RefWorks with a filter. Alternatively, use a computer on campus to export the records directly.
