The Dorothy Hill Physical Sciences and Engineering Library is one of 14 branch libraries of the University of Queensland Library.
It provides resources and services to support the teaching, learning and research needs of staff and students in Applied Science, Physics and Chemistry, Earth Sciences,
Engineering and Information Technology.
The Library was formed in 1990 and includes the C. S. Davis Mathematics Library and the Thomas Parnell Memorial Physics Library.
In 1997 the Library was refurbished and renamed the Dorothy Hill Physical Sciences and Engineering Library, after the late
Professor Dorothy Hill, and merged with the Geology Library collection. The transformation was guided by architect, Hamilton Wilson, with assistance from the University's Property and Facilities section. It was officially opened on 21 August 1998.
The collection of the Dorothy Hill Physical Sciences and Engineering Library provides teaching, learning and research materials in a wide variety of formats for onsite access, use and loan.
The collection includes:
- 90,000 books
- 120,000 bound volumes
- 2,000 current journal subscriptions
- 25,000 maps, videos and CD-Roms
- 1000 theses

Links to electronic resources are provided via the Library's website. These include 46,100 eJournals, 365,633 eBooks and over 876 databases.
Access to the global body of information is available through the internet.
Assistance in the use of information resources focuses on the specific needs of the clients.
There are over 80 public-access computers throughout the Dorothy Hill Physical Sciences and Engineering Library. These provide access to:

The Dorothy Hill Physical Sciences and Engineering Library is located in Building number 50 on the St Lucia Campus.
The entrance to the Library can be reached from the Hawken Building via Cooper Road into Level 2.
Information on parking (including casual parking) is available from the University's Traffic and Parking section.

The Dorothy Hill Physical Sciences and Engineering Library is a five-floor part of the Hawken Building. The main entrance is on Level 2.

On Level 1 you will find seating for large groups, photocopiers and computers. There is a drinking fountain on this level.

On Level 2 you will find the Information and Loans Desk, including the High Use Collection, the Consultation Desk, the Reference Collection, the recently received journals display, the recently received books display, folio books, the eZone, photocopiers, computers, maps and a courtesy telephone for dialling University of Queensland telephone numbers. The book return chute is located outside the library adjacent to the main entrance. Network printing is available on this level.
The Library staff area is also located on this level.

Upstairs, on Level 3 is the book collection, including theses, journals from UA-Z, Standards, a photocopier, a video player, a DVD player, group study rooms, and individual study spaces.
There are toilets on this level.

Above this, on Level 4 is the remainder of the journal collection, from A-TS, a photocopier, single study rooms, and study spaces.

The Dorothy Hill Research Centre, incorporating the Don Carruthers eXchange Zone is located on Level 5.
The Centre provides postgraduate study space, an opportunity for partnerships between the University and industry, areas for group interaction and collaborative spaces.

The Don Carruthers eXchange Zone is a meeting room within the Dorothy Hill Research Centre. It has data projection equipment. Videoconferencing is available to facilitate interchanges with industry and research partners as well as enhanced learning experiences.

There is a book return chute adjacent to the main entrance on Level 2. Books may be returned through this chute at all times.
The Dorothy Hill Physical Sciences and Engineering Library provides over 80 computers for accessing the Library website including the catalogue, databases, and the internet. MS Office, EndNote and email are available on all computers. Five Laptop computers with wireless and network access are available for loan from the loans desk. The wireless network covers a broad area on the St Lucia campus including all levels of the Dorothy Hill Physical Sciences and Enginnering Library. Powerpoints are available for personal laptops.
Members of the public have access to the Library catalogue and some electronic library resources.
Displays and exhibitions to promote Library and wider University activities can be arranged.

There are study areas available on Levels 2, 3 and 4 of the Dorothy Hill Physical Sciences and Engineering Library.
There are quiet discussion areas for group study on Levels 1, 3 and 4 of the Dorothy Hill Physical Sciences and Engineering Library.
There are fourteen individual study rooms on Level 4 of the Dorothy Hill Physical Sciences and Engineering Library. Bookings can be made using the Room Bookings System.
There are four group study rooms on Level 3, Dorothy Hill Physical Sciences and Engineering Library. Bookings can be made using the Room Bookings System.
Individual Study Rooms are available for students on Level 4. Bookings may be made for these rooms up to one week in advance, using the Room Bookings System.
The Bookings page is released daily at 4pm. To facilitate equitable sharing of the rooms students may use the Individual Study Rooms for a total of three sessions per week. One session is up to three hours. Individual Room keys must be collected within 15 minutes of booking time, or the booking will lapse. Bookings may be made by entering your UQ username and password in the relevant day, room and time on the booking sheet. Students may alter their bookings themselves if necessary.
Four Group Study Rooms are available for students on Level 3. There are a further two rooms for postgraduates on Level 5. Bookings may be made for these rooms up to one week in advance, using the Room Bookings System.
The Bookings page is released daily at 4pm. To facilitate equitable sharing of the rooms students may use the Group Study Rooms for a total of two sessions per week. One session is up to two hours. Group Room keys must be collected within 15 minutes of booking time, or the booking will lapse. Lockers are available for hire on a casual basis. They are located on Level 1 of the Library, Duhig Building (turn left immediately inside the main entrance).
Lockers for postgraduate students and students with disabilities are also available on Levels 3
and 4 of the Social Sciences and Humantities Library.
Over 90,000 books, 120,000 journal volumes, and 2000 current journal subscriptions are held in the Dorothy Hill Physical Sciences and Engineering Library. The collection also includes 25,000 maps, videos and CD-Roms.
The strengths of the Dorothy Hill Physical Sciences and Engineering Library are in computer science, earth science, mathematics, chemistry, physics, and the engineering disciplines, including civil, chemical, electrical, mechanical, mining and materials.

The Library holds:
The Map Collection comprises topographic and geological maps with some subject specific maps,
for example in forestry or soils. All maps have catalogue entries. The maps are in cabinets on Level 2 of the Dorothy Hill Physical Sciences and Engineering Library. Maps are not available for loan. World map coverage is at the 1: 1,000,000 scale. Australian coverage comes in two scales 1:100,000 and 1:250,000. Queensland map coverage is also at two scales:1:25,000 and 1:50,000.
University of Queensland theses and some other theses are listed in the catalogue.
University of Queensland higher degree theses produced at the University of Queensland for research Masters and Ph.D. degrees are deposited in Fryer Library. Some selected UQ Honours theses are also housed there.
In the Dorothy Hill Physical Sciences and Engineering Library theses are located on Level 3. The collection includes all postgraduate theses, some Honours theses and some fourth year engineering theses.
Access to the full text of a number of University of Queensland theses is now available through the library catalogue. These theses are part of the Australasian Digital Theses (ADT) Program, which aims to establish a distributed database of digital versions of theses produced by the postgraduate research students at Australian Universities. The full text of UQ theses is available within the University of Queensland domain. Abstracts of the theses are freely available to the worldwide community.
University of Queensland staff and students may suggest items to be added to the Library's collection.
Schools and Centres may also contact their Liasion Librarian, to make a suggestion for purchase.
New print material is displayed in the Recently Received Books and Journals area on Level 2 of the Dorothy Hill Physical Sciences and Engineering Library.

Many services for users with disabilities are provided by the University's Disability Program.
The Dorothy Hill Physical Sciences and Engineering Library is wheelchair accessible via the main entrance off Cooper Road. All levels of the library are served by lifts.
There are lockers for disabled users on Levels 3 and 4 of the Social Sciences and Humanities Library.
There are three Assistive Technology rooms for students with disabilities in the Fryer Library.

Lost property is held for one week at the Loans Desk on Level 2 and then is given to Security.

The Dorothy Hill Physical Sciences and Engineering Library provides copying facilities on all levels, and network printing on Level 2. Networked colour printing is also available on Level 2.
All copying is subject to copyright restrictions.
The automatic card dispensing machine, where copy cards can be purchased and value added to existing cards, is on Level 2.
Television programs useful for teaching, learning and research are copied and placed into the Library's collection. The Library also works closely with the Central Video Replay Service (CVRS).
