When will I need a password?
A password (called authentication) is required to:
- Login to Library computers - to enable access to USB devices, UQ personal file storage, the Internet, etc.
- Access secure online services - e.g. checking, renewing loans; accessing most databases and electronic journals
How do I get a password?
The Library supports two methods of authentication:
- UQ username and password - issued by the University to all staff and students in award courses
- LIbrary number and Library password - available to all registered clients or members of the Library
Both methods preserve the confidentiality of your transactions. However, you must not tell anyone your password.
UQ Username and Password
UQ Username
- Students: New students will receive a letter containing their username and password during the third week of January (or by the end of January for offers made in January). It consists of 's' followed by the first seven digits of your student number (eg. s1234567). It is the same as used for mySI-net and my.UQ. If you are unsure of your username, search for it here.
- Staff: Use the username of your UQ email account, e.g. if your name is Amanda Jones, your username might be uqajones.
Note: usernames are case sensitive, hence s1234567 is different from S1234567.
UQ Password
- Students: Your password was issued with your UQ username
- Staff: Use the password for your UQ email account
Your password should be between 6 and 12 characters long and should contain a mix of number and letters. Do not use special characters or punctuation marks, such as *, &, : , / , % or the space character.
Note: passwords are case sensitive.
For enquiries regarding usernames and passwords, please contact the UQ IT Service Desk on 3365 6000 or help@its.uq.edu.au.

Logging-in at Ipswich
Only UQ staff and students are able to log in to the computers in the Library at the Ipswich campus. Affiliates and "guests" can use the computers in the café and the High Use area. Note that these computers will not allow USB access, printing rights or access to MS-Office.
Does logging-in affect my UQ download quota?
When you login to a Library computer your download quota is not affected. However if you are using your laptop in the Library your download quota is affected.
Will all services be available from any Library computer?
Depending on your login entitlements, all services will be available from the vast majority of Library computers. However, some computers have access restricted to the Library website (no email or Microsoft Office). Check the label on the computer to see what is available.
Why can't non-UQ people write to USB devices?
Library affiliate members and "guests" have read only access to USB devices to ensure practical compliance with the Library's licensing agreements.
