Abstract


One of the most intriguing problems for archaeologists concerns the numbers of Australian people living as fisher-gatherer-hunters per unit area of the continent prior to the European invasion.  Were population densities related to the productive capacity of landscape and seascape, or to aspects of technology and material culture, or to the manner of organization of the social relations or production (Jones 1977:202, 1985:293)?
