Abstract

Many 21st Century health professionals are still relying on 20th Century information-seeking skills and behaviors acquired over many years of practice. They often find it difficult to keep pace with the latest information resources and most effective information retrieval methods. The outreach program at the health sciences library, University of Wisconsin-Madison, goes beyond the traditional instructional support for affiliated faculty, staff and students, to provide training in evidence-based search skills to professional groups around the state. The outreach training initiative reviews and renews current information-seeking skills of unaffiliated groups and individuals through self-assessments and customized evidence-based information-seeking workshops. Workshops provide an overview of EBP information resources, address various access issues, demonstrate a systematic approach to retrieving the best levels of evidence and, whenever possible, include interactive, hands-on practice with computers.

Ebling Library's 3-step training program carefully reviews and renews skills necessary to work effectively in today's fast-paced health information settings. Steps include:
? Pre-workshop self- assessments
? Customized training based on identified needs
? Continued information "after care" if needed

Coordinated by the Outreach & Distance Librarian and working closely with local facilitators, each workshop is based on assessment outcomes, areas of interest and special needs. Sessions are developed to accommodate existing skills sets with the intent to improve, expand and enhance. Workshops are scheduled in convenient locations, include interactive exercises and plenty of take-home materials. This paper will provide an overview of the outreach populations served to date, evaluative instruments used, samples of customized workshop agendas and testimonials from participants.
