The Walter Harrison Law Library is named after Walter Norwood Leslie Harrison, the Garrick Professor of Law and Dean of the School of Law between 1948 and 1964.
The collection consists predominately of material from common law jurisdictions with an emphasis on Australian, in particular Queensland, and British resources.
The Law Library is located in the Forgan Smith Building, adjacent to the T.C. Beirne School of Law. The library space was expanded and the interior restored in 1989 with an award winning design by architect Robert Riddel. In 1999/2000 the Library was refurbished with the assistance of Wilson Architects to embrace electronic advances in information delivery and new approaches to teaching and learning.
The Law Library holds the University’s main collection of Statutes and Law reports for Australia, the United Kingdom and selected other jurisdictions. The collection supports teaching and research in the Faculty of Business Economics and Law.
Links to electronic resources are provided via the Library’s website. These include over 51,000 eJournals, 400,000 eBooks, and over 976 databases. Access to the global body of information is available through the internet.
Assistance in the use of information resources focuses on the specific needs of its clients.

The Law Library occupies the western wing of the Forgan Smith Building (building 1 on the University map.) It is adjacent to the T.C. Beirne School of Law and the main entrance to the Library is from Level 2 (the Great Court level) of the building.
Information on parking (including casual parking) is available from the University’s Traffic and Parking section.

On Level 2 you will find the Service Desk, the High Use area, the Laptop recharge lockers and the Moot Court. In the High Use area you will find the High Use Collection, and the 'Requested items' shelf. A Photocopier is located in the High Use area. Computers providing access to the Library Website, databases and internet, 2 network printers and a photocopy card vending machine are also available. |
Level 3 houses two eZones, one of which is named the Sir James Blair Room. One contains 20 computers, the other 21. There are also 10 additional computers on this level. Computers are also available in the group study rooms on this level. Laptop ports are available for network access. There are individual study rooms and group study rooms which can be booked online.
Level 4 houses the Monograph Collection, Reference Collection, Journal Collection, the Reports and Statutes Collection, EUi Collection and Theses collection. There are also computers, a printer, a photocopier, a group study room and individual study rooms which can be booked online. Two Law School seminar rooms (W408 and W409) are also located on this level.

The Legal Research Guide provides links to databases and internet sites relevant to the study of law. It is a good starting point for finding legal information.
The Returns chute is situated in the Library Foyer, just outside the entrance to the Law Library. Keys must be returned to the Loans Desk. If the foyer doors outside the Law Library are closed, use the main foyer doors and corridor of the Forgan Smith Building to access the returns chute. This entrance is usually closed by 11pm each evening.
The Walter Harrison Law Library provides 83 computers for accessing the Library website including the catalogue, databases, the internet, email and word processing software. A Digital Projector is available for use in the Law Library’s group rooms - bookings can be made on the Facilities Booking System.
The Library is covered by a wireless network. Computers are also available in the group study rooms on Level 3 and Level 4.
A display area is available on Level 2. Displays and exhibitions are used to promote Library and wider University activities.

Laptop Recharge Lockers are located on Level 2. Bookings can be made online.
There are study areas available on Levels 2, 3 and 4 of the Walter Harrison Law Library.
There are 15 individual rooms available on Levels 3 and 4. Bookings may be made for these rooms up to one week in advance, using the Facilities Booking System.
The Bookings page is released daily at 4pm. To facilitate equitable sharing of the room/s students may use the Individual Rooms for a total of three sessions per week. One session is up to two hours.
Bookings may be made by entering your UQ username and password in the relevant day, room and time on the booking sheet. Students may alter their bookings themselves if necessary.
There are 6 group rooms available on Levels 3 and 4 of the Walter Harrison Law Library. Bookings may be made for these rooms up to one week in advance, using the Facilities Booking System.
The Bookings page is released daily at 4pm. To facilitate equitable sharing of the room/s students may use the Group Study Rooms for a total of three sessions per week. One session is up to two hours.
Bookings may be made by entering your UQ username and password in the relevant day, room and time on the booking sheet. Students may alter their bookings themselves if necessary.
There are quiet discussion areas for group study on Levels 2, 3 and 4 of the Walter Harrison Law Library.

Many resources are also available electronically.
In addition to material from common law jurisdictions, the Law Library also collects in the areas of jurisprudence, intellectual property, international law, maritime law and Asian and comparative law. Other areas are constantly being developed to support new teaching and research initiatives.

The Reports and Statutes collection, located on level 4, contains primary sources from all Australian and some overseas jurisdictions. It includes Legislation (Acts or Statutes), Subordinate Legislation (Rules, Regulations, By-Laws), and Law Reports (Published legal decisions).

The University of Queensland was granted the status of European Documentation Centre (EDC) in 1995 with the objective of helping the University to:
- "promote and consolidate teaching and research in the field of European integration", and to
- "make information on the European Union and its policies available to the public, both in the University and elsewhere"
(Article 4, EDC, Rules, annexed to agreement)
The name of the collection changed to EUi in 2007. Under the agreement between the University and the European Commission the EUi receives the majority of documents issued by the institutions of the Euopean Union. The supply of EUi deposit material commenced in 1996.
EUi material, located on Level 4, is available for loan in accordance with the Library borrowing conditions.
Loose-leaf services are collections of integrated resources, each covering a specific area of the law. They include commentaries on key issues in the area, often have the full text of key cases and legislation on the subject, and keep the reader up-to-date with recent developments in the field.
Most current loose-leaf services are located in the Reference Collection. Many are also available electronically. For details check the Library Catalogue.
WebLaw is a cooperative legal gateway maintained by a number of participating organisations, including the University of Queensland. It is a collection of subject guides to the law. Each guide contains links to carefully selected and annotated key Internet resources relevant to that subject area.
University of Queensland staff and students may suggest items to be added to the Library’s collection.

New print material is displayed in the Recently received Books and Journals area on Level 2 of the Walter Harrison Law Library.

The Walter Harrison Law Library, Forgan Smith Building, is wheelchair accessible from the Great Court. All levels of the library are served by a lift.
There are lockers for clients with disabilities on Level 2 of the Walter Harrison Law Library.
There are three special needs rooms for students with disabilities in the Fryer Library.

Loan enquiries can be made in person at the Loans Desk on Level 2 of the Walter Harrison Law Library or by telephone or email.
Books requested through Document Delivery or placed on hold can be collected from the High Use area on Level 2.
Lost property is held for one week at the Loans Desk on Level 2 and then is given to Security.

The Walter Harrison Law Library provides copying facilities and network printing
on levels 2 and 4. Wireless printing from your laptop or office to Library printers is also possible.
All copying is subject to Copyright Restrictions.
There is an automatic card dispensing machine on Level 2 where copy cards can be purchased and value added to existing cards.

Television programs useful for teaching, learning and research are copied and placed into the Library’s collection. The Library also works closely with the Central Video Replay Service (CVRS). Visit the Multimedia Service for more information.
