It is Georgian in style, and was constructed in red brick, with an imposing front entry in sandstone and a cupola A dome-like structure on the roof of a building designed to admit light and air on the roof for ventilation.

The ground floor provided space for a dispensary, surgery, visitor’s room, a dining room for nurses, and offices for the medical superintendent, matron and head attendant. It was situated not far from what were the main entry gates, with a large, circular driveway in the foreground, to allow ease of entry and departure.

Restoration of the building has seen the demolition of a fire escape which was added in the 1970’s to the southern side, spoiling the original symmetry of the building. The red brick work with white pointing, is synonymous of the buildings on the campus site, and this standard has been continued with the erection of new buildings.

The inside of the building is remarkably intact and has been converted to office space for the School of Tourism, the beautiful timber staircase and fireplaces being retained. It has extensive views to Mt Flinders from the top storey.
