General search engines

  • HotBot
    Offers searches of Google, AskJeeves as well as its own database. Provides simple and advanced search for each listed tool, as well as offering filtering options.
  • Gigablast
    Search by keyword or ask a question.
  • KartOO
    Presents links and shows relationships
  • Scirus
    A specialty search engine for journal articles and Web sites in all branches of science.

  • Sensis
    Owned by Telstra and linked to the Australian White and Yellow Pages, so as well as getting a list of global search results, you can get Australian business, product and service information relating to the topic you are researching. (This search engine appears to have replaced the Australian GOeureka and LookSmart sites, which are no longer available.

Meta-search engines

  • Dogpile
    Dogpile allows you to search the Web, Multimedia, News and FTP sites.
  • MetaCrawler
    MetaCrawler searches other search engines in parallel. It can automatically restrict the number of displayed responses by weeding out any irrelevant, outdated or unavailable material from the search results. You can view your results in different categories - web pages, images, audio/mp3.
  • SurfWax
    A new meta-search tool which allows you to "sample" site returns without leaving the search results window. Results are identifiable by search tool.
  • Vivisimo
    A meta-search tool which allows you to cluster results.
