What are Library notices?
The Library issues advice notices for items that have been borrowed and are due soon, overdue, or requested by another borrower, and for items that have been requested and are ready for pickup. For 14, 28 day and semester loans, the first notice you will receive will be a reminder notice 3 days before the due date. For 2 hour, 4 hour, 3 and 7 day loans, the first notice you will receive will be an alert notice when material is 1 day overdue.
How will I receive them?
If you are a UQ student or UQ staff member, email will be the default delivery method for reminder, overdue, recall and hold available notices. The email address used will be the UQ supplied email account. This is in accordance with the University policies 6.10.9 Email for students and 6.10.5 Email for staff, professional doctorates and RHD students.
If you are a student and you wish to use a different account, please refer to the IT Tools for Students booklet for instructions.
If you are a staff member and you wish to use a different account, please refer to the UQ Exchange Mail Handbook for guidelines.
Other borrowers: to receive notices quickly, we recommend that you have them delivered by email. To arrange this, please contact the Loans counter in any branch library and ask for your email address to be entered in your library record. Alternatively, you may call us on (07) 3346 4352 or send an email message to circ@library.uq.edu.au. For those who do not have access to email we will send you notices by the University mail service or by Australia Post.
What will they look like?
All notices follow a similar format. The details of the item borrowed or requested will appear at the top of the notice, followed by your name, address, library number and date of the notice at the bottom left. The information regarding the type of notice (eg. overdue, recall, request etc.) will appear at the bottom right of the notice. It is important not to confuse the dates on the notices. The examples below will explain more about each type of notice and show which dates are important on each.
Reminder notices
This notice is sent out by email only 3 days before the due date for 14, 28 day and semester loans.

Overdue item notices
This notice is sent out for any item that has not been returned or renewed by the due date. The message appearing in the bottom righthand box will depend on the type of material that has been borrowed, the length of time the item is overdue, and whether it is the first notice sent, etc. Any overdue charges that have been incurred will also be explained here.
eg.
If an item on 14 day loan is not returned or renewed by the due date, the following message will appear on the notice:
ALERT! The above material is now 1 day overdue. Please return or renew promptly.
Overdue charges apply for late returns. You can view and renew loans at http://library.uq.edu.au/patroninfo
If an item on 3 day loan is not returned or renewed by the due date, the following message will appear on the notice:
ALERT! The above material is now 1 day overdue and should be returned at once. Charges are accruing. If you returned the item recently this notice may not apply.
For an explanation of overdue charges, see the borrowing guide for your patron type.
Remember that all overdue charges can be avoided if items are returned or renewed on time.

Recalled item notices
If an item that is on 14 day (or longer) loan is requested by another borrower, the Library will recall the item, reducing the original borrower's loan period to at least 7 days. The new due date will appear in the top box as marked in the figure above.
Requested item notices
When an item you have requested becomes available, you will receive a notice advising you it is ready for pickup. The notice will specifiy where the item is to be picked up and how long it will remain there. If it has not been picked up by that date, it will be returned to the shelves. You will also be notified if requests you have placed have been cancelled.
