The Library is jointly funded by the University of Queensland and the Mater Hospital and is managed by the University of Queensland Library.
1. Purpose of the collection
The Library's collection supports the teaching, learning and research activities of the University of Queensland staff and students, as well as the clinical, research and teaching activities of Mater Hospitals staff
2. Primary user groups served
- Staff of UQ Departments of Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics and Child Health, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Psychiatry, Social and Preventive Medicine and Pharmacy based at the Mater
- Undergraduate and postgraduate medical and allied health students;
- All staff in the Mater Misericordiae Hospitals – Mater Adult Public Hospital, Mater Children's Public Hospital, Mater Mothers' Public Hospital, Mater Private Hospital, Mater Mothers' Private Hospital, Mater Children's Private Hospital
- Staff of Mater Medical Research Institute and Queensland Radium Institute – Mater

3. History of the collection
The Mater McAuley Library was formed in September 1998 by the amalgamation of the following libraries:
- Mater Medical Library, established in 1969 to serve the medical and allied health staff of the Mater Hospital and University staff and students based at the Mater
- McAuley Nursing Library was established in 1964 and was funded by the Mater Hospital
4. Description of the collection
The Library's collection is particularly strong in paediatrics and child health, nursing and obstetrics and gynaecology. Some material is collected to support allied health. The collection consists of 350 current journal titles and 6,500 books. 58% of the book collection is currently over 10 years old, although the policy is to collect only material published in the past ten years.
The University of Queensland Library has many electronic databases that are accessible in all branch libraries . These include:

The Library also has electronic access to collections of full text journals including:

- ScienceDirect (Elsevier)
The Library also holds a collection of leather bound books entitled Classics of Surgery donated by the family of Professor Mervyn Neely.
5. Interdisciplinary relationships
Other University of Queensland libraries supplement the resources of Mater Library:
- Herston Health Sciences Library has strong collections in hospital administration, internal medicine, obstetrics, gynaecology, nursing, pathology, psychiatry, public health, paediatrics, social and preventive medicine and surgery, tropical health and nutrition and nursing.
- Biological Sciences Library collects in the areas of anatomy, biochemistry, microbiology, occupational therapy, pharmacy, physiology, pharmacology and physiotherapy
- Princess Alexandra Hospital Library has a strong collection in dermatology, gastrology, orthopaedics, psychiatry, radiology and ophthalmology.
- Social Sciences and Humanities Library has significant collections in the fields of psychology, psychiatry, social work, speech pathology and public health.
- Law Library collects material in medico-legal and bioethics areas.
