1. Purpose of the collection
The Library's collection in dentistry is intended to support the teaching and research activities of the School of Dentistry, which is part of the Faculty of Health Sciences. The Library is located in the School of Dentistry at Turbot Street.
2. Primary user groups served
The Dentistry Library houses the collection of materials intended to support the teaching and research within the School of Dentistry. The School of Dentistry is one of the schools within the Faculty of Health Sciences.
3. History of the collection
In 1936 the Faculty of Dentistry established a library collection in the Dental Hospital. It was administered by the Dean of Dentistry until the mid 1950's, when it was taken over by the University of Queensland Library and a qualified librarian appointed. It remains the oldest dental collection in Queensland and is significant for its depth and breadth.
4. Description of the collection
The strengths of the collection in the Dentistry Library are in general dentistry and the dentistry specialties such as orthodontics, prosthodontics, periodontics, endodontics, pedodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery and also oral health.
The Library holds over 5000 monograph titles and subscribes to 145 current journal subscriptions.
The University of Queensland Library has many electronic databases that are accessible in all branch libraries . These include:

The Library also has electronic access to collections of full text journals including:

5. Interdisciplinary relationships
The School shares common interests and has collaborative projects with the School of Population Health, the School of Pharmacy, the School of Biomedical Sciences, the School of Molecular and Microbial Sciences, the School of Engineering, and the UQ Centre for Clinical Research based at the Royal Brisbane & Women's Hospital at Herston.
The resources for the School of Dentistry are shared between the Dentistry Library and the Biological Sciences Library. However, the main collection is located in the Dentistry Library. These resources are supplemented by material held at the Herston Health Sciences, Princess Alexandra Hospital, UQ Mater McAuley and the Dorothy Hill Physical Science and Engineering Libraries.
6. Scope of current collecting
- Languages collected: The dentistry collection includes English language material only.
- Types (forms) of materials collected: Dentistry material is collected in all forms, both physical and electronic.
- Chronological periods collected: The library collects material published in the last 10 years. Material is purchased retrospectively, when academic staff specificallyrequest it.
- Types (formats) of material collected: No forms of material are excluded.
- Publication dates: The emphasis is on collecting recent publications.
