Google Scholar

Google Scholar is a simple and effective way to search for scholarly literature across many disciplines using a single search query.

Coverage

  • Hard to know how much of the scholarly literature is included because the criteria for selecting scholarly materials are not given
  • It does search academic publishers, professional societies, preprint and digital repositories as well as universities and scholarly organisations, finding articles, theses, books, abstracts, patents, conference proceedings, technical reports and court opinions
  • Coverage is not comprehensive so use specialised databases as well. UQ Library homepage enables you to select databases by subject

Good Features

  • UQ Library makes its subscribed content available via Google Scholar
  • Good for identifying journal titles and authors connected with subjects of interest and finding related articles on similar topics
  • Offers an advanced search to focus your results
  • Helps find obscure references or more information on partial citations
  • Google Scholar Citations can be used to compute and track citation metrics

Not-so-good Features

  • Not everything is full-text nor is it free
  • Results may include citations only
  • Cannot sort results except by date
  • Cannot save a search query as you can in databases such as Scopus or Web of Science
  • Only one citation at a time can be exported to EndNote or other bibliographic software
