Proximity Operators and Phrase Searching

Proximity Operators

Proximity operators enable you to define how closely you want your search terms to be found in relation to one another. For instance:

  • circumstances /s mitigating will find your search terms within the same sentence
  • market /5 share will find them within /n words of each other
  • filing pre/5 bankrupt! the first word must precede the second by no more than pre/n words

Like truncation and wildcards, proximity operators may vary from database to database. Check the database help if you are unsure.

Phrase Searching

Phrase searching is when quotation marks " " are used to signify a phrase. For instance, by placing quotations marks around "duty of care", the database would return only those results which contained that exact phrase.
