Legal Research Strategy

There are 3 main steps for legal research: analyse & plan, research the law, and apply the law.

1. Analyse and Plan

• Identify the key facts of the case
• Determine the legal issues these represent
• Plan your search strategy

2. Research the Law

• Find the law using both secondary and primary resoruces
• Read and Evaluate the Law
• Update the Law (checking whether it is still good law)

3. Apply the law

• Apply the law to the facts of your case
