Bills

Before a statute is passed by parliament it is known as a bill. A bill contains clauses that have been drafted by the Office of Parliamentary Counsel. Bills are discussed and considered in detail in parliament before they are passed and become law.

The bill may be proposed by a variety of sources such as a government department but may only be introduced to parliament by a member of parliament. A private members bill is simply one that is not sponsored by the Government. It travels the same path as any other public bill.
