Authorised Reports
All Australian jurisdictions have an official or 'authorised' series of law reports, e.g.
- Commonwealth Law Reports (CLR)
- Queensland Reports (Qd R)
Authorised reports are checked by the court responsible for the decision before being published. For this reason, they can take several months to be published.
N.B. Appendix C of Catriona Cook et. al., Laying Down the Law (8th ed. 2012) provides a comprehensive list of many law report series and indicates which are the authorised reports of each jurisdiction.
When citing a case such as Donoghue v Stevenson which has been reported in more than one law report, it is important that you cite the authorised version if one exists.
