The Fryer Library is the branch of The University of Queensland Library responsible for special collections. It has extensive Australian studies collections of published and unpublished material. Women’s studies, with a focus on women’s involvement in social and political movements, are a particular strength.

Fryer has many fine examples of personal papers and records from Queensland women and women’s organisations. Holdings include the personal papers of notable poet and political activist Oodgeroo Noonuccal, former ALP Senator Margaret Reynolds, and political activists Daisy Marchisotti, Kath Thomas, Connie Healy and Eva Bacon.

There are also records of the Queensland Branch of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, the Union of Australian Women and the Women's Bookshop which was one of the first specialist bookshops in Brisbane to focus on women's studies. Collections of posters, pamphlets, books and journals provide researchers with further insight into Queensland women’s political activities.

The Fryer Library wishes to acknowledge its gratitude to women and organisations who have deposited their unique papers and records in the past. This has ensured the material is preserved and made available to researchers now and in the future, within this University and to the wider community The Fryer Library is now launching a new collecting initiative to add to its women’s collections. We are seeking further material to build an even richer resource documenting women’s stories and struggles.

If you are considering depositing material in the Fryer Library or making a donation to assist in the preservation of these collections, please contact staff at the Information Desk in the Fryer Library or telephone (07) 3346 9427.
