Professor Laurence John Hartley Teakle

Professor Teakle was Professor of Agriculture from 1947 until 1963, when he was appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor. He was trained in Australia and California and had a distinguished record in Western Australia for research into soils, and made major contributions that state's land settlement program. In 1946 and 1947 he was W.A. Commissioner for Soil Conservation. At UQ he did considerable research into the Darling Downs black soils and served abroad for various periods as agricultural consultant to governments of developing nations. In April 1969 he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws for his service to the University. He retired from UQ at the end of 1970 and in 1971 the then Agriculture/Entomology building was named the Hartley Teakle building to mark his distinguished and devoted service to the University. |
