Harold Parker Sculptor and Artist 1873-1962
The story of the sculptor Harold Parker can be found in the papers his family deposited in The Fryer Library. UQFL7 opens the door to a life of work, which showed early promise and demonstrated Queensland marble as a suitable medium for artists.
Parker was 3 years old when his family arrived from England to settle in Dornoch Terrace, West End in 1876. He began his art studies at the Brisbane Technical College in 1888. After completing carved furniture for the NSW Forestry Commission exhibited at the Chicago Exhibition of 1893, he moved to London to further his studies in 1896.
Whilst studying, he won prizes and scholarships, and his skills so impressed one judge that he was taken on as an assistant.
By 1903 he had his own studio. Elected to the Royal Society of British Sculptors in 1906, he continued to exhibit with them until 1947 . . .
