Stranded vessels, Brisbane Botanic Gardens

Precautionary measures were taken to secure vessels that may have been vulnerable to the raging waters, but nothing could have prepared the city for what ensued.

Ferries were halted due to the height and force of the water. Many steamers that left the port of Brisbane were unable to proceed on their voyages, and had to wait out the rough weather at Cape Moreton and other sheltered moorings. The survey ship, HMQS Paluma was one of three vessels stranded in the gardens, it was later floated free in the following flood of 19 February 1893
