After the sesqui-centenary, Thelma remained in Sydney, working for various theatre companies. Her designs for various productions cover a wide range of periods and styles. In the late 1940s, she was appointed designer at Sydney’s Minerva Theatre in King’s Cross, which staged such productions as Pride and Prejudice; The Winslow Boy; Ah, Wilderness and The Philadelphia Story.
The latter was staged in 1948, with a cast of fourteen, many of whom needed multiple costumes. At the beginning of the second act, Tracy wears a housecoat over the foundation of an evening dress, which is the costume for the next scene.
Detail of fabric swatches
Thelma’s illustration for this design has fabric swatches attached, including the main fabric of bronze taffeta and a sheer fine blue marquisette for the foundation garment.
Several of the other designs in her albums also include fabric swatches in a range of fabrics and styles.
