Item 27 Album 2, UQFL184 |
One of the albums in the Afford collection is devoted to the Sydney celebrations. Designs for the historical pageant and other events spanned the period 1788 to 1910, and included the uniforms of various military regiments stationed in the colonies.
Thelma undertook rigorous research to ensure the accuracy of her historical designs, and notebooks detailing that research are also held in the collection.
One example covered in both the notebooks and the albums of finished designs is the uniform of a soldier in the 18th Royal Irish from around 1870. Sketched front and back views of the uniform appear in a bulging exercise book, accompanied by notes on the design of details such as buttons and epaulettes.
The final design in the album includes a full length colour illustration with inset illustrations of the detail on the hat and coattails.
