Stories told through letters or diary entries hardly seem unconventional in contemporary fiction; due to its particular combination of intimacy, realism, and suspense, the genre experienced a surge in popularity in the 18th century that pushed it into conventional territory. However, despite its familiarity, the flexibility of the form continues to encourage experimental narration.
