Whether published in a periodical publication or as a standalone work, instalment fiction is more than just a novel cut into parts; as an episodic form, its narration must focus on keeping readers engaged. The form was most popular in the 19th century; however, the ease and immediacy of electronic publishing hints at new life for the serial story in the future.
