This is a collection of annotated photographs relating to the career of Capt. R .A. Beazley, a Veteran of Gallipoli, in Papua New Guinea. The annotations were done by Mr John Murphy. Of the total, some 368 were taken in Papua New Guinea, the rest are related to family and friends and scenes of Brisbane in the early part of the twentieth century. The black and white photographs depict landscapes, oil depots, official residences, indigenous people, and plantations. Places depicted include Sepik R, Hermit Is, Marienberg Mission, Central Mountains,Yuat River Warrior, Maramuni River Area, Aua Is., Hui Is., and Maron. Officials or fellow prospectors, men working in oil companies etc, photographed include N.O. Dwyer, G. Gibson, A. Collins, E. Munro, D. Jensen and B. MacGregor. Reginald A Beazley, born in 1896, a resident of Brisbane, was a returned soldier who managed a plantation on Manus Island which had been expropriated from the Germans after World War 1.
He prospected for gold near the junction of the Juat and Jimmi Rivers, in Papua New Guinea in 1928. In partnership with Bill Macgregor he recruited indigenous labour. His reports on the lives and customs of the indigenous people were a valuable source of information to anthropologists. He lead the Akmana Expedition in its second attempt to find gold. His unpublished book titled New Guinea Adventure by Marta Bele, with John Murphy’s annotations, is an account of his years in Papua New Guinea. | |
