The collection reflects Dr Tugby's interests as an anthropologist, in areas of Indonesia, Malaysia and Netherlands New Guinea. The papers comprise lecture material on Southeast Asia; correspondence with Indonesian academics; typescripts of ethnological surveys and anthropological research reports; research field notes on the Mandailing people from Sumatra; a typescript of a translation from English to a Bahasa dialect; annual reports on Netherlands New Guinea by the Netherlands Government, and other papers, many of which are written in Dutch.
Dr Donald John Tugby, born 1920, was an anthropologist and member of staff of the Department of Anthropology and Sociology, University of Queensland. In the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, Dr Tugby conducted research in areas of Indonesia, Malaysia and Netherlands New Guinea. He was interested particularly in the Mandailing people of Sumatra, and in 1977 he published the results of this research as a book, Cultural Change and Identity : Mandailing Immigrants in West Malaysia.
