Guide to Indigenous Material held in Fryer Library

The Fryer Library holds considerable collections of Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, Papua New Guinean and Pacific Islander material acquired over the past 80 years. This includes unpublished archival materials, paintings, drawings, prints and photographs which form an important part of the history of Indigenous people in the South Pacific region. Fryer also holds extensive collections of published books and journals which can be found in the Library's catalogue.

Of particular note are the collections of photographs from non-Indigenous collectors such as Father Edward Leo Hayes, Ernestine Hill, Norman F. Nelson, Raphael Cilento and the Murray Islands Fisheries Limited. The literary works of Indigenous authors such as Oodgeroo Noonuccal, Herb Wharton and the David Unaipon Award entries held within the University of Queensland Press Collection also hold valuable research material.

The Fryer Library works in partnership with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit at the University of Queensland to ensure that access to Indigenous material is provided in a culturally appropriate manner.

Please ensure that you use such material in a respectful manner, consistent with the views and sensitivities of Indigenous peoples. In some cases, access to secret or sacred material has been restricted. The conditions of these restrictions are listed in the Library Catalogue.
