The Fryer Library Award
The Award aims to provide successful applicants with institutional support and affiliation to the Faculty of Arts at The University of Queensland to undertake research in Australian literature, history and culture utilising the collections of the Fryer Library. The next Award will be made in 2010. Applications are particularly invited in the following areas:
  • Indigenous studies
  • History of architecture
  • Art and design
  • Theatre and literary studies
The amount of the award is $10,000.

In addition up to two Honorary Fryer Library Awards may be offered.

Successful applicants will be provided with support for their project, including desk space, computer access, photocopying and full Library access. It is anticipated that successful applicants will be based at the St Lucia campus of the University of Queensland for a negotiated period of at least three months, up to a maximum of six months.

The Fryer Library
The Fryer Library contains The University of Queensland Library's special collections and holds one of the largest collections of manuscripts in Australian academic libraries. The collections also contain rare books, theses, pictures, ephemera and architectural plans. The Fryer Library's strengths are in Australian studies:
  • Literature
  • Theatre
  • History and politics with a focus on Queensland
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander studies
  • Art
  • Queensland architecture

2009 Award Winner

The Fryer Library and the Faculty of Arts of The University of Queensland wish to announce that Dr Jane Hunt from the School of English, Media Studies and Art History at UQ is the recipient of the Fryer Award for 2009.

Dr Hunt received her BA from the University of Western Sydney in 1996 and her PhD from Macquarie University in 2002. She will commence her project, working on Fryer's extensive Daphne Mayo collection, in the second semester of 2009. The Daphne Mayo collection consists of 98 boxes of correspondence and other written records, as well as sculptures, artworks and photographs.
