Guide to manuscripts on Australian Art and Artists

This list is a guide to unpublished sources about art and artists held in the collections of the Fryer Library. It is not exhaustive, and does not include items from Fryer Library’s collection of Queensland Art Gallery Files, Art Exhibition Catalogues or from the Hayes collection. Patrons should consult the online catalogue for holdings in these collections.

Father Leo Hayes commissioned the book from artist Ella Lilian Pedersen, who, in addition to illuminating and hand-lettering the poems, crafted a tooled leather binding inset with semi-precious gems from Father Hayes‘ collection. The original cover was damaged, and restored with the remaining gemstone by bookbinder Anne Cloonan.

Copies of two heliograph drawings from field book nos 216 and 217 respectively, Department of Lands containing field notes by John Oxley, Surveyor General, in connection with the survey of Moreton Bay in September and October 1824, [18--]
Sketches are of two Aboriginal bora grounds in the Moreton Bay district accompanied by a copy of a letter signed ‘H. Selkirk, 14th July 1920’ as The Under Secretary for Lands. Selkirk’s letter notes that the earliest pictorial representation of a bora ground was believed to be 1832, but "the present drawings are considerably older, and consequently of still greater interest..."
