Henry Alcock, McCaughey Professor of History and Economic Science, 1922-1948, at the University of Queensland, was the University’s first Professor of Modern History. He was born in 1886 in Bath, England; graduated with First Class Honours from Oxford in 1908; and began a teaching career in England. In 1914 he was appointed as a lecturer in History at the University of Queensland. In his first years at the University he remodelled all the modern history courses, and developed a full Honours programme. He became increasingly interested in economics and commercial studies, and in 1922 was appointed to the Chair of History and Economic Science. The first full Faculty of Commerce was created in 1925, and Henry Alcock became its first Dean, serving in this position until 1938. Alcock was involved in the newly-formed Workers’ Educational Association in Queensland, teaching classes in Economic History and acting as Secretary to the W.E.A. Committtee of Management. At the university, his administrative activities included being Dean of the Faculty of Arts from 1923 to 1938, and membership of the University Senate liaison committee to work with architects Hennessy and Hennessy on the development of the St Lucia site. He was a member of the University Senate from 1929 to 1944, and President of the Professorial Board from 1932 to 1938. Henry Alcock died in Brisbane in 1948. A representation of him was one of the first grotesques to be erected in the cloisters of the Great Court of The University of Queensland at Street Lucia. The Alcock Collection consists of over 2000 glass slides. The series within the collection, called "Images of early Brisbane", includes images of buildings, landmarks and views of Brisbane, including the 1893 floods. Also included are images of the University of Queensland in its early years. |
