Primary Sources held by Fryer Library relating to the 1967 Referendum and other Indigenous Struggles of the 1960s

These sources provide information about the social and political background of the 1967 referendum, the Queensland state laws governing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander affairs at the time, the organisations and individuals at the forefront of campaigns in the 1960s for civil rights for indigenous people, the key events leading up to the referendum, the referendum itself, and other indigenous struggles of the era.

Abbreviations

  • CATSIAL   Cairns Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders Advancement League, a Cairns based organisation linked to the QCAATI. One of its main activists was Joe McGinness who became president of the FCAATSI in 1962
  • FCAATSI  Federal Council for the Advancement of Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders, the organisation that led the ‘Yes’ campaign across Australia
  • QCAATI  Queensland Council for the Advancement of Aborigines and Torres [Strait] Islanders
