I was directed to this page by a librarian.

Architecture students regularly used a web site called http://www.nearmap.com/.
It is similar to google maps however contained updated and archived aerial photographs of areas in much better detail. Previously it was a free service, but just recently has been a pay only service.

I'm sure many other disciplines used this service for their studies and it would be a great asset for students.
